Welcome-History

The ‘Sydney Kings Cup’ was established by the Sydney Kings in the 1990s to promote junior basketball in schools. In 2007, over 300 boys in 30 teams participated in a 2-day robin-robin format at Newington College. The final two teams; Scots and Shore, played in the curtain raiser to the Sydney Kings-Brisbane Bullets clash at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in early November, 2007. Shore was the last school to win the tournament prior to the collapse of the Sydney Kings in 2008.

With the demise of the Sydney Kings, many schools expressed interest in the following the same format in 2008 because of the ‘institutionalisation’ of the tournament in the school sporting calendar.

Phil Webster established the ‘Schools Shootout’ in 2008, providing 2 divisions and at least 4 games per team in a round robin format until the quarter finals. NBL Hall of Famer, Ken Cole sponsors the perpetual trophy for the premier division(the Ken Cole Trophy). Ken Cole travelled from the United States in 2008 to present The Kings School the trophy and has touted the possible participation of a US High School in future years. St Lukes Grammar were the divisions winners in 2008 and both finals were played before a Sydney Spirit (now defunct) NBL game.

By 2010, the Sydney Kings NBL franchise returned as the major sponsor,  naming the development division trophy ‘the sydney kings trophy’.  The tournament has included public schools, such as Killarney Heights High and Melbourne High School and is now open to any school or school system.
